Geographically, Papua New Guinea lies just south of the Equator. Between the altitudes of 4’000 to 8’000 feet in the Highlands Region, the volcanic soils and favorable climate provide an excellent growing environment for coffee. The coffee harvest in Papua New Guinea occurs during the months of April through September each year. The highly favorable growing environment in the Highlands can encourage coffee bearing that lasts well into the latter part of the year. The bulk of Papua New Guinea’s production, over 70%, is small-holder village grown coffee that is processed by individual farmers and purchased at the farm gate by mobile buyers or at town depots. This system maximizes the returns to the local farmers.
